Essay: Legitimacy of Assisted Suicide

Sample Essay

It is evident that different schools of thought exist upon the subject of assisted suicide and that each is rooted in a logic and reasoning of its own (Snyder & Caplan, 2001). A fact that makes it difficult to determine the legitimacy of assisted suicide as a fair means of ending one’s life is the fact that while some may choose to exploit it, others consider it to be an early way out of pain for patients suffering from illnesses that would otherwise lead to an agonizing death.

In the United States alone, assisted suicide is considered legal in a few states while the general validity of assisted suicide still remains subject to debate (Bilirakis, 1998). Attempts to legalize suicide began to come forth around the mid 1960s and the argument on whether or not assisted suicide should be legalized has remained active ever since (Mitchell, 2007).
